Cruising with your family

If you have read my other posts, you can tell I love to travel. It is my way to reconnect with my family. We are on the go and work a lot so to have a week of uninterrupted time together is unheard of. We stop the craziness and go on vacation. One of our favorite ways to vacation is to cruise. We are big on activities and they are endless on ships.

Our first cruise was out of Boston in August and went up to Nova Scotia. The kids were 3 and 23 months old. It was on Premier Cruise Line, now out of business. We wanted to try cruising, it was close to home and inexpensive so we tried it. We were fortunate to be upgraded to a suite, had lots of fun on the ship, ate like kings and were HOOKED on cruising!

When the kids were 2 and 4, we cruised on Carnival. Their Camp Carnival was great! I believe that they are the only cruiseline that allows 2 year olds in the kids program, and one of the main reasons we picked them. Our son would have never stayed there if he didn't have his little sister as side kick. There were lots of other kids and they kept them having fun and doing lots of projects. The dining room staff was great with them and had my sons grilled cheese (which he basically lived on then) ready every night. My daughter survived on the unlimited supply of "Banilla" (soft serve vanilla). We went in January (off season) so the weather wasn't the best. We had to go around a few rain storms and it was cloudy the day we were in Cozumel (we left the kids on the ship and went for a walk in Cozumel, we were glad we didn't take them here). Our Grand Caymen day was beautiful and we got to take the kids to the beach.

I was able to win a cruise through the company I was a consultant for in 2000. I went alone on the Celebrity Millenium. I had a room with a veranda. There were no children on board because the company had chartered it so I can't speak of the kids programs but it was a perfect ship for couples. The ship was beautiful, the service excellent, our ports of call were amazing. My favorite and a must have for future sailings was the stop at the private island of Labadee. Water sports, hammocks on the beach, secluded beach areas, BBQ. Everything about it was wonderful and the best part was the only ones there are you and your shipmates. Another of my favorites was Trunk Bay in St John. We took a boat from St Thomas and went to St John to snorkle. It is right off a gorgeous beach, unbelievable and well worth it! One of the prettiest places I have ever been to.

Disney was our next venture and it was worth the wait! We chose a 4 night cruise after 4 days at the park. From getting to Port Canaveral to get on the ship until the last minute it was an experience. We went with my family, there were 10 of us all together. Goofy and Pluto greeted the kids and kept them busy while we checked in. The party on deck as we set sail was full of characters and truly amazing for kids young and old. The ship was meticulous as are all things Disney. The service outstanding, the food unbelievable, the entertainment top notch. Castaway Cay was our favorite with plenty for adults and kids to do. The kids program was perfect! From Dancing with Donald to storytime with Wendy, it was such an intimate setting with the characters. They took their time every time they were with the kids and it was so nice to slow down after running from ride to ride at the parks.

Our next plan is to get onto one of Royal Caribbean's mega ships. Everyone I know that has been on Royal Caribbean, raves about it! Now that we are a family of 5 we will have to get 2 cabins. I'll let you know how that goes but in the meantime, I hope this helped.

Happy sailing!
